This interactive workshop will equip HR professionals with the knowledge and skills to conduct legally sound workplace investigations. Participants will learn different approaches and receive tools they can apply to navigate complaints and achieve resolution. Through practical exercises and real-world examples, the workshop emphasizes aligning investigative steps with the specific allegations at issue, ensuring conclusions are grounded in both facts and applicable legal principles.

Guided by an attorney and former HR professional, you’ll learn:

The core elements of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims under Title VII
How legal standards should shape investigative strategy, questioning, and analysis
How to distinguish between inappropriate conduct and unlawful behavior
How to investigate different types of claims (e.g., disparate treatment, hostile work environment, and retaliation
How to evaluate evidence and credibility
How to develop well-reasoned, defensible findings
Emerging trends in complaint intake amid the growing availability of AI tools that help employees articulate concerns

About the Facilitator: Trisha M. Earls

Trisha brings a unique combination of legal and business expertise to The Hawkins Firm. Her practice focuses on independent internal investigations and giving her clients practical, real-world employment law advice. Over her career as an attorney and company executive, Trisha has investigated more than 1,000 employee complaints. She started her legal career in Atlanta with Fisher Phillips, a management-side labor and employment law boutique, after graduating from the Ohio State University College of law in 1995.

Trisha left private practice in 2001 to join Equifax, Inc. as Associate Group Counsel, where she managed all employment litigation for the $1.4 Billion company. Equifax named her its first Compliance and Ethics Officer, leading those efforts in the U.S. and eight other countries. After Equifax, Trisha served in various HR leadership roles such as a Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel for Education Management Corporation, the second largest proprietary education company in the U.S. Before joining The Hawkins Firm, she held other CHRO roles, most recently as Chief People, Legal and Compliance Officer for Tegra LLC, a private equity-owned sports apparel manufacturer with more than 12,000 employees in the U.S., Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.

Trisha earned her B.A. degree in Political Science from the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. She is a member of the State Bar of Georgia.
